  He grunted, and some of the tension in his mouth eased as he gave me a crooked smile. “They said I love you and you love me. And then they asked me what the fuck I was doing?”

  “I wasn’t.” I lifted my head to lock my gaze with his. “I was going to add, that I don’t expect you to feel the same way I do.”

  “Because I was already mad as hell they were here. And then…I figured, if it was something you really needed…I should be all right with it.”

  Caleb turned off the stove and keeping one arm around me, used tongs to pick up the steaks and set them on a platter. “These are going to get cold.”

  “We won’t have this place anymore to come to during our breaks. We won’t have holidays to bring us together. Your mom’s in San Antonio. My dad’s staying in Austin.”

  “Which isn’t far. We could still manage to see each other.”

  “But we won’t be together.”

  Ash stared after his disappearing figure. Sam Blalock seemed nice enough, on the surface. And he’d been a friend of Marc’s. She knew she should trust him. But something about the way he’d studied her with his short glances throughout the drive irritated. She’d noted them from the corner of her eye while she’d pretended not to notice.
